OptumRx customer records on stolen laptop compromised

The online prescription drug company OptumRx reported that an unknown number of customer records were compromised when a vendor employee's laptop was stolen.

In a statement to the California Office of the Attorney General, the company, which is part of UnitedHealth, said it was notified that on March 16 that an unencrypted laptop belonging to an OptumRx vendor was stolen from that person's vehicle in Indianapolis, Ind. The laptop contained customer names, addresses, health plan name, prescription drug information, prescribing provider information and in some cases date of birth.

OptumRx said no financial information or Social Security numbers were on the laptop.

The company is working with local law enforcement and the vendor to put in place additional levels of protection for its laptops. In addition, the company is sending out letters notifying those whose information was breached and supplying each with a one-year subscription to LifeLock.
