Report: Authorities close to filing charges against JPMorgan hackers

March 16, 2015

Federal authorities may soon be releasing the names of the individuals behind the 2014 JPMorgan Chase data breach.

According to unnamed sources who spoke with The New York Times, the feds are confident that a case will be filed against the cybercriminals behind the breach that compromised up to 83 million customer records, and exposed the names, addresses and phone numbers of households and small businesses.

Officials that spoke with The Times said that some of the suspects involved were “gettable,” meaning that they may be located in countries where the U.S. has an extradition treaty set up, which likely rules out Russia where no deal is in place.

The FBI in New York is leading the investigation, in addition to a top prosecutor within the computer crimes division of  the office of Preet Bharara, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan.
