S.C. senator wants full taxpayer breach story disclosed

A South Carolina official says that residents are owed the full story on the massive taxpayer breach that struck the state in 2012.

A Thursday Associated Press article reported the efforts of Sen. Vincent Sheheen, D-Camden. Despite the fact that Gov. Nikki Haley released the highlights of a Mandiant report in Nov. 2012, which delved into what happened during the incident, Sheheen pressed for an unredacted version of the report to be revealed.

Following the 2012 breach, it was found that Social Security numbers of 3.8 electronic tax filers, as well as 1.9 million of their dependents, were stolen by attackers. In addition, nearly 700,000 businesses, 3.3 million bank accounts and 5,000 expired credit cards were reportedly compromised, as a result.

“The people whose information was hacked into deserve to know what happened,” Sheheen told AP.
