A claim Monday by Snapsaved.com that its servers had been breached and 500 megabytes of photographs had been stolen, prompted Snapchat to issue a warning to users about “the unfortunate threats these third-party applications can pose.”
Although Snapchat itself was not compromised, the company noted that third party apps “often ask for Snapchat login credentials” to be used to send or receive snaps and access account information.
In the interest of building “an open and trustworthy third-party application ecosystem," SnapChat has not “provided a public API to developers” and in addition, “prohibit(s) access to the private API” used to provide its service, the warning noted.
On Monday Snapsaved.com, a website that lets users save Snapchat photos, said it “had a misconfiguration in (its) Apache server,” and as soon as it discovered the breach “immediately deleted the entire website and the database associated with it.”
