Cloud security firm Boxcryptor sells assets to Dropbox

Dropbox announced that it has agreed to purchase key assets of Boxcryptor, a Germany-based cloud security company, for undisclosed terms, according to TechCrunch. The acquisition is part of Dropbox's goal of providing end-to-end encryption to enterprise users. Businesses value end-to-end encryption because it ensures that confidential documents that they store in the cloud cannot be accessed by intermediaries. Currently, Dropbox's security system provides encryption for files moving between its servers and the files destination, but the company is still technically able to view all content in-transit. Boxcryptor's technology adds an extra security layer by offering what is known as zero knowledge encryption on the side of the client, which means clients have full control over which parties are permitted to decrypt their data. Dropbox said it intends for these features to be available natively for enterprise users. By providing our technology and deep-expertise to a global tech company like Dropbox, well be able to better scale our security capabilities through Dropbox's global platform and provide an elevated encryption experience for users, Boxcryptor said in a statement.
