Global hospitality company Hilton Worldwide is investigating a data breach at its properties that might have compromised customers' payment card information.
Cybersecurity blogger Brian Krebs initially reported the breach on Friday and indicated the breach might have occurred at Hilton's point-of-sale registers in gift shops and restaurants. Visa apparently alerted financial institutions of a breach between April 21, 2015 and July 27, 2015, along with compromised card numbers, Krebs wrote.
That alert didn't specifically cite Hilton, but five different banks pointed to the cards' use at the hotel chain's properties as the sole commonality.
“Hilton Worldwide is strongly committed to protecting our customers' credit card information,” the company said in an emailed statement to SCMagazine.com. “We have many systems in place and work with some of the top experts in the field to address data security. Unfortunately the possibility of fraudulent credit card activity is all too common for every company in today's marketplace. We take any potential issue very seriously, and we are looking into this matter.”
