WannaCry-mimicking ransomware targeting Russian gamers

Multiplayer first-person shooter game Enlisted had its Russian-speaking players targeted by a phishing campaign distributing ransomware mimicking the WannaCry strain, reports The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. Attackers have created a fake Enlisted website luring players to download the game installer and ransomware, which has been named 'WannaCry 3.0' but is in fact a custom variant of the Crypter ransomware designed to target Windows systems, according to a Cyble report. Execution of WannaCry 3.0 triggers file encryption, which will then be followed by the appearance of a ransomware note on the home screen detailing instructions on how to negotiate with the attackers for a decryption key. Such attacks come amid frequent targeting of popular games, with threat actors exploiting the lax security measures of some gamers, with The Last of Us game used in malware-distributing scams in January just prior to the release of its TV series.
