A Nigerian man was sentenced today to three years in prison for his role in a phishing scheme that targeted U.S. government employees and defrauded vendors of nearly $1 million.
Abiodun Adejohn, who goes by a number of aliases, had pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy in a New Jersey federal court in June, according to an FBI release.
Adejohn used fraudulent emails and websites mimicking U.S. government agencies to lure employees, who believing the sites to be legitimate, would supply their login credentials. Adejohn and his associates would then use the stolen information to access employee email accounts and place fraudulent orders for office supplies to government-authorized vendors.
When the orders were shipped to locations in New Jersey, Adejohn and his crew would repackage them and sell them in Nigeria. Adejohn was also ordered to pay $630,306.48 in restitution.
