A hacker claims to have exposed Gamma International, a U.K. company which distributes controversial spyware called “FinFisher.”
Last week, a Reddit user called “PhineasFisher” claimed to have “made off with 40GB of data from Gamma's networks,” and in doing so, provided proof of the company's unethical business practices, such as selling to government clients who use the software to spy on Bahraini activists.
After allegedly accessing the data, the hacker set up a Twitter page to underscore some of the more “interesting” findings.
In August 2012, researchers at the Citizen Lab published a report which revealed that FinFisher could infect mobile devices on all major platforms, including iOS, Android and Windows Mobile. Before that, Citizen Lab and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) had continued to express their concerns about Gamma allegedly selling spyware to repressive regimes, despite its public denial.
