Breach at Peachtree Orthopedics impacted 531K, report

A breach at Atlanta-based Peachtree Orthopedics, first announced in the fall, is now said to have affected more than half a million clients.

How many victims? 531,000

What type of information? Patient names, home addresses, email addresses and dates of birth were put at risk. For some patients, treatment codes, prescription records and Social Security numbers also were put at risk.

What happened? The facility announced an "unauthorized intrusion into our computer system." Patients of the Peachtree Orthopaedic Clinic prior to July 2014, and some after that date, were impacted. It wasn't until Dec. 13 that Channel 2's Carol Sbarge reported the number of those impacted by the breach.

What was the response? Letters were sent out to those affected and a year of  free identity protection services, including credit monitoring, was offered. Plus, a dedicated call center was setup. A hacker calling himself "the dark overlord" claimed responsibility for the breach and provided samples of the data to lure potential buyers.
