At least 2.07 million data sets with personal information have been leaked or feared leaked from 140 organisations in Japan during 2015.
Results of a Kyodo News survey were reported by the Bangkok Post: “Of the 140, 75 organisations said they noticed they had been attacked only after police or another outside body alerted them.” The remaining 65 said they realised on their own they were under cyber-attack.
The victims include 69 private businesses, 49 government agencies and their affiliates and 22 universities. Nineteen of the reported attacks were targeted through virus-infected files sent via email as well as other types of attacks. DDoS attacks were confirmed by 32 organisations.
Security experts cautioned that there could be many organisations that were affected and don't know it and stressed the importance of sharing information and cooperating between industries.
