Indiana data breach dates back to 2001

The personal information of hundreds of Jeffersonville, IN vendors and officials may have been compromised in an ongoing data breach that dates back to 2001.

How many victims? About 311.

What type of personal information? Names, addresses, Social Security numbers and tax-identification numbers.

What happened? Emails containing information on city vendors and officials were mistakenly sent to Jeffersonville employees.

What was the response? City officials worked with the Jeffersonville IT squad to delete inappropriately sent emails from city employee inboxes. The city alerted all impacted individuals and is offering a free year of identity theft and credit monitoring services to those who were affected.

Details: The emails containing the information were mistakenly sent to Jeffersonville employees dating back to 2001, when the finance department started sending out a monthly list of vendor payments. City officials learned of the ongoing issue after recently installed computer software made Social Security numbers appear more prominently in the system.

Quote: “Because this is a serious incident, we strongly encourage you to take preventative measures now to help prevent and detect any misuse of your information,” Amy Deering, Jeffersonville controller, wrote in a letter sent to those affected.
