A Discussion on Dark Web Threats in 2018

By Marcos Colon

Accessing the dark web may require special software access, but it’s certainly a place you do not want to visit if you don’t have a solid understanding of what it is…or what you’re getting yourself into for that matter.

As a security practitioner, it’s important to know why you should care about the dark web, and stay abreast of the latest developments tied to this nefarious part of the World Wide Web. Most recently, it’s become a little easier to access it from mobile devices, which should be cause for concern. However, there are other aspects to take note of, according to Digital Shadows CISO Rick Holland.

Following the takedown of Alphabay and Hansa, the two English-language successors to the Silk Road, many users have been looking to see what’s next and what will replace the markets.

“Really we’ve been looking at the aftermath of Hansa and Alphabay and what that means for a lot of cybercriminals is more OPSEC less trust, and more person-to-person communication,” Holland told InfoSec Insider during a recent interview shot at the Black Hat Conference in Las Vegas.

In the full video interview below, Holland discusses the latest dark web threats this year, and what security practitioners should have on their radar.
