InterContinental Hotels Group announces breach at 12 U.S. properties

A little more than a month after the InterContinental Hotel Group said it was investigating claims of a possible breach, the chain said a payment card breach affected 12 of its U.S. properties.

Names, card numbers, expiration dates, and verification codes were compromised for customers who used their cards between August and December 2016 according to a press release.

Officials are unable to confirm how many were affected by the breach, an IHG spokesperson told SC Media.

Properties in Chicago, San Francisco and Aruba were among the affected bunch, to a Reuters report, and the company said it is still conducting an investigation on other hotels in the regions.

In December 2016, the hotel chain said it had hired a cybersecurity firm to investigate claims of a payment card breach at some of its U.S. hotels just four months after InterContinental's Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants announced it had found a malware on its servers.

"IHG has been working with the security firms to review IHG's security measures, confirm that this issue has been remediated, and evaluate ways to enhance IHG's security measures," the spokesperson said. "IHG has notified law enforcement and is working with the payment card networks so that the banks that issue payment cards can be made aware and initiate heightened monitoring on the affected cards."
